In one of the more intriguing surveys of recent weeks, website One News Page has found that over half of the people it surveyed will be replacing Google with Bing as their main search engine.
The news portal surveyed 1,000 people and found that 55 per cent of those who answered preferred to use Bing to search for things on the internet.
Even more unbelievable, 68 per cent of those surveyed actually liked the name Bing – they must really like Chandler from Friends – and 90 per cent said they would use the expression ‘to Bing it’.
Just Bing it!
‘Microsoft has a winner in Bing and in a couple of years it may be a force to be reckoned with,’ said Dr Marc Pinter-Krainer, founder of One News Page.
‘Microsoft finds ways of entering late into mature markets and flexing its huge marketing muscles to grab substantial share.
‘My verdict is that Bing will give Google a good run for its money, and the resulting competition in the search engine market can only be a good thing.’
In other news, three out of three out of four TechRadar journalists will never say the expression ‘to Bing it’ without sniggering. And that is a fact.
Digg has just rolled out its long anticipated integration of Facebook Connect. The move allows non-Digg users to sign into the social news site using their Facebook credentials, while enabling current Digg users to connect their account with the social network.
Once Facebook Connect has been activated, you’re able to publish your Diggs, comments, and submissions back to your Facebook News Feed. You can also quickly invite your Facebook friends to Digg. Kevin Rose gives a quick tour of the integration in the video below:
This is an important move for both companies. For Digg, it means a lot more exposure on Facebook, as their millions of existing users link their accounts and publish information back to their News Feeds. For Facebook, it represents a huge new partner for Facebook Connect, which the company hopes will become an identity standard for users across the Web. The partnership was first announced all the way back in August of last year.
Apple has finally admitted a British man who left school at 15 “is the inventor of the iPod,” the Daily Mail claims.
At issue is the case of Kane Kramer, who allegedly invented technology that drives Apple (and other) music players 30 years ago – but hasn’t seen any return on his investment.
It appears Kramer’s claim to have invented some element of the music player was borne out by Apple in its case against Burst.com. Apple flew Kramer to California to give evidence during that trial – Kramer could prove prior art in the case.
The UK inventor put together a concept called the IXI in 1979. A digital music player, the original conceit stored only 3.5 minutes of data on its chip, was credit card sized and held a rectangular screen along with a central menu button.
While Kramer was able to patent the invention then, 1988 saw his company fail to secure the £60,000 needed to renew the patent across 120 countries “and the technology became public property”, the Mail reports.
While he no longer has claims, he was able to help Apple defend itself against Burst.com. He told the Mail: “To be honest, I was just so pleased that finally something that I had done which has been a huge success and changed the music industry was being acknowledged. I was really quite emotional about it all.”
Kramer is negotiating with Apple for compensation from the copyright that he owns on the drawings, but has received only a consultancy fee so far – despite Apple’s billions of dollars in the bank.
The British inventor last year had to sell his house and move his wife and three children into rented accommodation
